Well Gwynne and friends did it!
Art Matters Society opened the art centre — gallery & artist collective — August 1, at 5417 Argyle Street.  They have a gallery, store, workshop area and a small stage for performance art. They also have a 540 sq foot back space that overlooks the harbour and will be used for gatherings and good weather workshops. They have an event coming up that they would really like to promote: Summer Feast-6:30-9:30 PM Sat August 27th at the centre. $6 for non members and $5 for members of the Art Matters Society collective. Food and a chance to meet the collective and see this exciting new space. Artists on the gallery wall right now inlcude Jillian Mayne, Ann McIvor, Robert Gunn, Kristen Hunt, Rachel Rose, Jen Fisher-Bradley, Joan New and Tehani Burnett.

As well, they have workshops starting in September. Saturday drop in art classes for kids Sept 10, 17 and 24th, 11 AM-12:30 PM.September 10th we are also having a garage sale  of unique and artistic stuff. 8 AM-noon. On September 17th they are performing The Curse of the Pharaoh’s Tomb at 7 PM -$5 for non members, $4 for members.

Other workshops that start in September: writing classes for adults, colour your own tarot, tole painting, button art and painting classes. To become a member and show your art at the centre and to receive discounts for all events and workshops you can take out a $25 membership. Community support members pay $20 and receive discounts.

People’s Choice Awards

The Solstice Group Show at Rollin Gallery closed on Friday. It was an interesting and diverse exhibit. Thanks to all the artists who participated and to Chris Doman and Robert Gunn who facilitated. Votes for the People’s Choice Awards have been tallied and Art Rave is happy to announce the prize winners:
First Prize – Jillian Mayne.
Second Prize was shared by two artists – Potter, Espeth Watson and acrylic painter, Paul Jorgensen.
